The cornerstone of feline health maintenance is regular veterinary examinations. This is
recommended annually for all cats up to age seven, and biannually for seniors (cats
eight and older). During regular veterinary check-ups, the doctor will obtain a complete
history regarding your cat's current condition and environment, perform a thorough
physical exam, and make recommendations to optimize your cat's health. Another important
aspect of preventative medicine is vaccination. Meadows Cat Hospital follows the
guidelines set forth by the American Association of Feline Practitioners and tailors
vaccination protocols to your cat's unique risk factors. In addition, we recommend
annual fecal parasite testing for all cats, and yearly lab-work for all seniors to
facilitate early detection of disease. By catching these problems early, we can adjust
the diet and/or prescribe medications to slow and even reverse these disease processes.
Finally, Meadows Cat Hospital believes that all at-risk cats (those which go outside)
should be given medication year-round to prevent fleas and internal parasites.
Diagnostic testing is critical in the maintenance of your cat's health. Meadows Cat
Hospital has a complete in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment. In a matter
of minutes, we can obtain information regarding your cat's internal health via complete
blood cell counts (CBC), blood chemistries, thyroid levels, and urinalysis. In addition,
we utilize radiographs (x-rays) to evaluate internal structures such as bones, heart,
lungs, and abdominal organs. When faced with very complicated medical cases, we refer
to area specialists for ultrasound, endoscopy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and
other advanced testing, to ensure the highest quality of care for your cat.
Meadows Cat Hospital has a fully-equipped surgical suite and complete dental set-up to
meet the needs of your cat. We determine the safest anesthetic protocol for individual
patients, utilizing a combination of low-dose, reversible injectable medication and the
safest inhalant anesthetic available in veterinary medicine, Sevoflurane. The patient is
placed on a surgical monitor to track body temperature, heart and respiratory rates,
blood pressure, and oxygen saturation. These vital statistics are monitored by a
technician throughout the procedure. Routine procedures such as dental cleanings,
neuters, and laceration/abscess repairs, are discharged same-day, while involved
surgeries such as spays, declaws, abdominal explorations, and foreign body removals, are
hospitalized for a minimum of one night. Meadows Cat Hospital strongly believes in pain
management and aggressively attacks all aspects of pain by utilizing a combination of
non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, opiates, and local anesthetics when applicable. We
readily refer to local board-certified surgeons and dentists if advanced care is
required.
Meadows Cat Hospital offers full-service boarding 365 days per year. We have three large
and 18 regular kennels to pamper your cat. A large window provides viewing
entertainment, and our more social guests are given recreation time outside their
kennels (access to the boarding facility, treatment area, and doctor's office). Our
kennel staff is trained to administer all medications, including injectable insulin.
Dr. Laramore attends to the boarders personally on the weekends. We monitor your cat's
appetite, demeanor, urination, and defecation, to ensure a healthy, uneventful stay. In
addition, we utilize the plug-in, synthetic pheromone Feliway in the boarding facility
to relax our more stressed guests. To ensure the health of your cat as well as that of
the other boarders, all cats must be current on their core immunizations (three-way
vaccine which includes feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia, as well
as rabies), and owners must provide proof of current flea preventative medication and a
negative fecal parasite test within 30 days of boarding.
